Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has concluded South Africa’s citrus export season for the year with a 19% year-on-year increase in volumes handled across the country’s ports.

TPT says South Africa had one of the best citrus seasons logistically, with the Durban Multipurpose Terminal, in particular, having handled 131% higher volumes than in the prior season.

The Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 also recorded a citrus volume handling increase of 28.8% year-on-year.

Moreover, the Ngqura Container Terminal handled 35% more volume compared with last year, while the Cape Town Container Terminal recorded an increase of 27.4% year-on-year.

TPT invested R3.4-billion on equipment over the last year, which had container terminals employ new and critical cargo handling equipment throughout the citrus export season. These included new straddle carriers, reach stackers, empty container handlers, haulers, trailers and rubber-tyred gantry cranes.

TPT commercial and planning GM Michelle van Buren Schele says this year has been a remarkable achievement for the group, attributing the logistics performance to a bumper crop season, much improved terminal operational performance and strong collaboration with customers and stakeholders.

The entity is investing another R4-billion in the current financial year on new operating equipment at five terminals.
